How to use your MacBook Notch Plus?

There is a black cutout at the top of your screen holding a camera and nothing else. Here is how to transform it into the most focused, productive command center on your Mac.

·9 min read·Updated for v1.4.0

First, what is the notch?

It is the small black cutout at the top of the display on every MacBook Pro since 2021 and every MacBook Air since 2022. Apple placed the 1080p FaceTime HD camera inside it and handed the remaining strip on the left and right to the macOS menu bar.

The center part itself has always sat dead. You cannot click it. Nothing lives in it. It is the single piece of hardware real estate right at your direct line of sight that has never done a day's work.

That is the space Notch Plus activates. And if your Mac doesn't have a physical notch — such as an external Studio Display, an iMac, a Mac mini, or an older MacBook Air — Notch Plus simulates a pixel-perfect notch at the top of any monitor. Every tool and animation behaves identically.

The whole app, in three moves

There are no complex configurations or onboarding tutorials to slog through. Using Notch Plus is as natural as using the macOS Dock:

  1. Move your pointer to the notch. A fluid native panel drops down smoothly underneath your camera with physics-based spring dampening.
  2. Pick a tool. Switch instantly between tools using the bottom icon strip or quick keyboard shortcuts.
  3. Move away — or Pin. Move your cursor away and it tucks itself back up. Need it to stay visible while you talk or code? Tap the new Hold Open / Pin icon (or hit P) to keep it anchored on screen.

The first panel you meet is Home: your current playing audio, upcoming calendar meeting, live system vital rings, and fast launcher shortcuts.

The Prompter: Natural eye contact on every video call

Whether you are pitching investors, presenting a sprint demo on Zoom, or recording a YouTube tutorial, traditional teleprompter windows force your eyes to dart down to the middle or bottom of your screen. To the audience, it looks like you are reading a script.

The Prompter module in Notch Plus fixes this mechanically. Because the text scrolls directly below the MacBook camera lens, your gaze remains fixed on the webcam. To everyone on the other end, you are making unwavering, confident eye contact.

  • Stealth Mode: Notch Plus renders the prompter using native macOS window-sharing exclusion (NSWindow.sharingType = .none). Even when you share your full desktop on Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams, the prompter is 100% invisible to other attendees and absent from screen recordings.
  • OpenDyslexic Typography: Easily toggle between clean Sans and the scientifically weighted OpenDyslexic typeface for fatigue-free reading.
  • Hands-Free Auto-Scroll: Adjustable scrolling speeds from 1 to 10 lines per second, with instant keyboard hotkeys (Space to pause, ▲/▼ for speed, and R to rewind).

Your live earnings, without opening a dashboard

If you build digital products or run SaaS businesses, you know the destructive loop: open Stripe in a new browser tab, sign in with two-factor authentication, check today's gross volume, close the tab, and repeat forty minutes later.

The Revenue module terminates that distraction. Plug in a read-only API key from Stripe, Razorpay, Polar, or Dodo Payments. Your real-time sales appear directly in the notch. Every incoming charge triggers a subtle celebratory banner with the amount, and the running total stays cleanly visible.

Your secret keys never touch any external server. They are stored strictly inside your Mac's encrypted macOS Keychain and query provider APIs directly.

Your traffic, without opening another browser tab

The Analytics tool brings the same simplicity to your visitors. Connect DataFast or Google Analytics to view the metrics that actually matter: active live visitors on the site right now, 24-hour pageviews, bounce rates, average session duration, top referral URLs, and your highest-performing pages. Toggle between the last 7 days and 30 days with a single tap.

Dynamic Island Music Player & Ambient Soundscapes

Say goodbye to awkward floating mini-players. Notch Plus embeds a full-featured Dynamic Island style audio hub directly inside your notch:

  • Integrated Music Player: Seamlessly syncs with Spotify, Apple Music (using local AppleScript integration), and an in-notch responsive YouTube player. Includes an interactive scrubbable waveform, album artwork, track title, and system volume controls.
  • Layered Ambient Soundscapes: Eight high-definition focus soundscapes including Rain, Deep Waves, Coffee Shop, Forest, Lo-Fi, and White Noise. You can even layer them — rain under lo-fi is an office favorite — and set automatic sleep timers.

Smart Calculator: From quick sums to scientific trigonometry

When you need to compute taxes, conversions, or engineering equations, switching to the bulky macOS Calculator app disrupts your workflow.

The Smart Calculator in Notch Plus provides an instant popup pad that accepts physical keyboard typing as well as mouse clicks.

  • Dual Mode: Switch between clean Basic arithmetic (with MC, MR, M+, M- memory registers) and full Scientific mode.
  • Scientific Toolkit: Full trigonometry (sin, cos, tan with DEG/RAD switch), logarithms (ln, log), exponents (x^y, e^x), square & cube roots, factorials, and constants (π, e).
  • Tape History: Every calculation is preserved in an audit tape. Click any past result to copy or re-insert it immediately.

A Shelf for files that follows you across apps

Drag a file up onto the notch and it parks there on the Shelf. That single action eliminates dozens of trips digging through your Downloads or Desktop folders.

Drop in three client images, a PDF invoice, or an icon SVG. When you switch over to Figma, Slack, Mail, or Keynote, hover the notch and drag them straight in. Nothing is uploaded to the cloud — it is an ephemeral local staging area.

Convert images locally without sketchy ad-filled websites

We have all experienced it: you need a PNG as a WebP or JPEG, so you Google a converter and end up uploading proprietary design work to an untrusted site smothered with banner ads.

The Files & Converter tools handle this right inside the notch. Drop any image into the notch to convert between PNG, JPEG, HEIC, WebP, and PDF. Adjust the quality slider or set a strict maximum target size (such as “under 400 KB”) and drag the processed file right back out. It is processed offline via Apple's native CoreGraphics and ImageIO frameworks in milliseconds.

Clipboard: Everything you copied is waiting for you

Default macOS clipboard memory is ruthlessly unforgiving: copy something new, and whatever you had copied four seconds earlier is erased forever.

Clipboard maintains a full, searchable history of text snippets, URLs, hex color codes, and images. Each entry is stamped with its source application and timestamp. Search with fuzzy filtering, pin recurring boilerplate snippets, and click once to paste.

Focus Timers, Hardware Vitals & Screen Time

Three essential utilities designed for glanceable clarity:

  • Timers: Four-round Pomodoro interval clock with break reminders, quick preset countdowns (5m, 15m, 25m), lap stopwatch, and an hourly hydration reminder.
  • Stats: Real-time animated rings for CPU load, RAM utilization, SSD storage, live network upload/download bandwidth, and true battery health cycle count.
  • Screen Time: Accurate breakdown of active app usage with real app icons and a 7-day retrospective chart.

For Developers & AI Engineers: Claude Code in your notch

If you build software using the Claude Code CLI, Notch Plus parses your local session logs (~/.claude/) safely on device. It visualizes tokens consumed today, message counts, active tool calls, current working directory, and a GitHub-style green contribution streak grid. No API keys are required and your conversation prompts are never read.

Everyday Essentials: Notes, Calendar, Weather, Links & Emoji

The remaining tools replace half a dozen standalone menu bar accessories:

  • Notes & Scratchpad: Dual-pane markdown scratchpad for jotting meeting points or temporary API keys, with full search and pinning.
  • Calendar: 7-day glanceable event timeline with integrated Apple Reminders that you can complete directly from the panel.
  • Weather: Real-time conditions, precipitation chances, hourly temperature curves, and an accurate 7-day forecast.
  • Links: Multi-engine web search launcher (Google, Perplexity, GitHub, DuckDuckGo, YouTube) and single-click bookmarks.
  • Emoji & Units: Fast category-based emoji picker and comprehensive offline unit & currency converter (currencies, lengths, weights, temperatures).

Three handcrafted themes

Because the notch is a constant companion on your screen, Notch Plus offers three distinct aesthetic themes that update every tool simultaneously:

  • Pure Monolith: Crisp monochrome aesthetic with customizable single-accent colors that blends seamlessly into standard macOS Dark and Light modes.
  • Pulse Green: Warm pista green accents highlighting metrics, charts, and vital indicators.
  • Cyber Neon: Vibrant cybernetic glows and vivid phosphor styling designed for high-contrast focus.

What a normal day looks like with Notch Plus

You lift your MacBook lid in the morning. The collapsed notch quietly displays the current temperature and your first meeting time. A Stripe sale arrives, and a smooth green pill slides out with the earnings.

At 10 AM, you hop onto a team Zoom presentation. You hover the notch, pin the Prompter open with your speaker notes in OpenDyslexic font, and deliver your pitch while looking directly into the camera. Nobody on the call sees your prompter.

In the afternoon, you start a 25-minute Pomodoro timer, layer Rain soundscapes under Lo-Fi beats, drop client screenshots onto the Shelf, convert an image to WebP in the notch, and quickly verify project margins on the Smart Calculator.

You never opened a separate dashboard tab. You never left your active workspace.
